Presentation of the new World Bank Group report
A new World Bank study on poverty and shared prosperity says that extreme poverty worldwide continues to fall despite the lethargic state of the global economy. But it warns that given projected growth trends, reducing high inequality may be necessary to reach the world’s goal of ending extreme poverty by 2030.
Poverty and Shared Prosperity 2016: Taking on Inequality—the first edition of a new report series that will provide the latest estimates and trends in global poverty and shared prosperity each year—takes a close look at the role that inequality reduction plays in ending extreme poverty and improving the livelihoods of the poorest in every country. It addresses some myths about the global picture of inequality, and strongly advocates for expanded and improved data collection on poverty, shared prosperity, and inequality. This information can help better understand what is driving or hindering progress in these crucial areas, track progress more closely, and design policies targeted to reach those who need them the most.
This joint event will be introduced by Marcel Fratzscher, President of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin). World Bank Group economists Mario Negre and Christoph Lakner will then present the new Poverty and Shared Prosperity report and its key findings, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Kati Krähnert, Head of the DIW department Development and Security, with Ingolf Dietrich, Director for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Colonel Faguimba Ibrahima Kansaye, Military Attaché, as representative of the embassy of Mali, and Mario Negre, World Bank Group. Afterwards, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss.
